Mr. SO Tak Tai, Derek graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts ("HKAPA") majoring in Horn. He studied horn under the tutelage of the renowned Ms. Cheryl Hoard (form er Principal Horn, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra) and Mr. Homer Lee. SO was the member of Hong Kong Sinfonietta and the Macao Chamber Orchestra. Currently, So is one of the horn players of Hong Kong Festival Wind Orchestra.
SO has performed extensively throughout the Asia Pacific region with orchestras. He has performed with the Hong Kong Festival Wind Orchestra in Jeju Summer Band Festival (1997 and 2004), Chiayi City International Band Festival (2004), All Japan Band Contest - Miyagi Prefecture (2001) and 12th Conference of Asian Pacific Band Directors Association (“APBDA”) in Guangzhou (2002). In 2005, he has performed in WASBE (World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles) conference in Singapore as a representative of Hong Kong Wind Philharmonia.
SO was a committee member of Hong Kong Band Directors Association (“HKBDA”) and he has successfully organized years of Hong Kong International Band Festival and the 16th Conference of APBDA in Hong Kong (2010), which numerous experienced and famous musicians, international bands and conductors were invited and participated.
Enthusiastic in music education, SO is actively involved in conducting symphonic bands in primary and secondary schools. As the music director and conductor of Tuen Mun Government Secondary School Symphonic Band (“TMSSB”) for more than 10-years, SO has lead TMSSB to win the silver prize (2001) and gold prize (2002) in Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows - Secondary School Senior Class. Throughout 2009 to 2013, TMSSB has also acquired silver prizes in the symphonic band competitions organized by the Music Office under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
In addition to competitions, SO has also brought TMSSB to various music tours including Jeju Summer Band Festival in Korea (2001 and 2004); Chiayi City International Band Festival (2002) and the Conference of APBDA in Tainan (2008).
In April 2009, SO and a group of TMGSS alumni found the Tuen Mun Government Secondary School Alumni Wind Orchestra (“TMGSSAWO”) of which he serves as the music director and conductor. Its performance in Band Fair 2009 has garnered overwhelming critical acclaim.
